The ninth annual Management & Finance Day, organized by the Management and Economics Society of CIM, will feature expert speakers sharing their experiences and insights around key topics driving the industry.

SPEAKERS

Phillips S. Baker, Jr.
President & CEO – Hecla Mining Co.

Phillips S. Baker, Jr. has been with the Hecla since 2001. During Phil’s tenure, the 125-year-old Company has been transformed into one with long-lived mines, large land positions and a focus primarily in the Americas. Today Hecla has become the largest primary silver producer in the US, has the highest reserves and production in its history from four mines in strong mining jurisdictions, and has seen its share price increase 600%, more than any other precious metals company in North America. Looking forwards, consistent with Hecla’s strategy, Phil is leading the effort to usher in a new era in mining that adopts the technologies of the digital age to improve safety, productivity and environmental responsibility. With 30 years in the industry he has experienced the booms and busts of the commodity cycles; and knows what creates long-term value for shareholders.

Allan Brownrigg
Senior Director – Resource Capital Funds

Allan Brownrigg has worked in project management for 40 years after earning a BEng degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineers (AACE); Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM); Order of Engineers of Quebec (OIQ); and Society for Mining Metallurgy & Exploration (SME). He has been involved on several international brownfield and greenfield projects from the feasibility study through start-up, living 35 years overseas. Mr. Brownrigg has held positions such as Project Coordinator, Project Manager, and Program Director within Owner and Engineer organizations. He is currently Senior Project Director for Resource Capital Funds (RCF) in Denver, Colorado. RCF is a private equity fund which invests exclusively in mining projects of numerous mineral commodities on several continents.

Carolyn Burns
Director, Operations, NetPositive

Carolyn Burns is interested in how big organizations interact with the people they impact. She specializes in designing and implementing operations and management process to make things run smoothly and efficiently. Specifically, Carolyn has helped big corporations, academic institutions, small companies and non-profits implement operational systems to understand and manage their interactions with people. Carolyn is from Edmonton, Alberta and has lived and worked in many countries. She has a Masters in Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business, a Graduate Certificate in Community Relations in the Extractive Sector from Queen’s University and an Honours Bachelor of Arts from McGill University. This is the fourth start-up organization that Carolyn has worked with.

Jon Hykawy
President and Director, Stormcrow Capital

Jon Hykawy began working in the financial services industry in Toronto in 2001, and has reluctantly been involved in it ever since. He was trained as a nuclear physicist, and worked at Atomic Energy of Canada’s Chalk River Laboratories and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. His original equity coverage area after joining Canaccord in 2000 was technology, but this transitioned to clean technology and then to the materials that are critical to the deployment of clean technology. His current focus centers on the markets for, and the business surrounding, critical materials such as lithium, rare earths, borates, cobalt, fertilizers and other generally non-quoted metals and minerals. Jon holds BSc and PhD degrees in physics along with an MBA, and is a 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics recipient along with the other members of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Collaboration.

Kip Jeffrey
Professor of Mining Education – University of Exeter – Camborne School of Mines

Professor Kip Jeffrey trained as a Mining Geologist & Industrial Mineralogist, and spent his early career in precious and base metal mining, industrial minerals and the extractive industries in both Australia and the UK. He joined the University of Leicester in 1996 and has researched into mineral exploration, MVT deposit formation, deposit evaluation, and sustainable mining. He is passionate about gemstones, is a qualified gemmologist, and developed the Diamond Professional Programme for De Beers staff based in UK and southern Africa. Since joining the University of Exeter as the First Quantum Minerals Professor of Mining Education, he has worked with industry, governments and universities to provide creative mining education solutions promoting national & local employment within world class mines in developing countries. He now directs the Mining Professional blended learning programmes and is currently Head of the Camborne School of Mines.

Tin Lwin
Managing Principal – Export Development Canada

Tin Lwin is Managing Principal, Technical Advisory Services, of the Export Development Canada (EDC). He is a licensed professional engineer with 20 years of mining and metals project finance transaction and 28 years of engineering, project management and commercial experience. He led technical due diligence activities in most of the mining and metals project finance transactions undertaken by EDC, including some in the capacity of mandated technical agent on behalf of commercial lenders and export credit agencies. He has project experience in Asia, Africa, North and South America and Oceania, and has been involved in various large and complex transactions in the mining and metals sector.

Ian Thompson
Principal, Shinglespit Consultants Inc.

Ian Thomson has more than 40 years of experience in the mining industry, working for the last two decades to advance and refine the management of social issues in resource development projects. His area of expertise includes stakeholder engagement, capacity building, design and development of sustainable social relations and guiding multi-stakeholder processes. Thomson has led development of new standards and guidelines for best practice management of social issues during exploration, facilitated construction of the Principles and Guidance for Responsible Exploration for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), and was a prime mover in developing both the concept and metrics of the Social License to Operate. He is principal of Shinglespit Consultants Inc. He was a founding member and principal of On Common Ground Consultants Inc. and has held management positions with Orvana Minerals Corp and Placer Development Ltd.

Heather Ednie
Managing Director of CIM Mining Standards and Guidelines Committee (MSGC)

Heather Ednie has over 16 years’ experience in mining communications and association management, including serving as CIM Director of Media and Communications from 2003-2009. In this capacity, she led the design and launch of the CIM Magazine, and worked collaboratively with industry leaders to develop conference programs and publications content. Since then, Heather has provided corporate communications, outreach, editorial and planning services for a variety of organizations. Heather’s focus continues to be in the areas of project management, stakeholder collaboration and communications.

Jane Spooner
Vice President, Micon International Ltd.

Jane Spooner, M.Sc., P.Geo., FCIM trained as a geologist specializing in mineral market analysis and mineral policy studies. Ms. Spooner also undertakes project management for several of Micon’s due diligence reviews, independent Technical Reports and pre-feasibility studies. She is Co-Chairman of Micon’s affiliated company, M.Plan International Limited. Jane is on the executive of CIM Management and Economics Society (MES), recipient of the CIM Robert Elver Award for mineral economics, co-founder of Management and Finance Day, and is a Fellow of CIM.

CHAIRS

Bereket A. Berhe
Associate, Watts, Griffis and McOuat Ltd.

Bereket Berhe is a geological engineer with over 17 years of experience in the global mining and oil & gas sector. He has extensive experience in the valuation, evaluation, and project due diligence, financial modeling and analysis of projects at various stages of development. He has carried out an extensive research in support of numerous assignments: including the screening of companies and projects for investment purposes, market studies, data reviews and reviews of exploration and mining properties and/or companies. Earlier in his career, working as a field geologist, senior field engineer and research associate, he has conducted or assisted with, geophysical data acquisition and processing, drilling planning and monitoring, core logging, prospecting, mapping, sampling, and target generation. His most recent assignments include the valuation of precious and base metal development projects from North America, Africa and China.

Jessie Liu-Ernsting
Associate, Resource Capital Funds

Jessie Liu-Ernsting has ten years of experience in the mining industry, spanning engineering consulting, banking and private equity. Jessie works for Resource Capital Funds (RCF), one of the largest mining-focused private equity funds, where she identifies potential investment opportunities, performs financial analysis and due diligence exercises, and assists in portfolio company governance to maximize value for investors.

Previously, Jessie worked in the mining corporate credit group at CIBC, providing bank debt financing solutions. Prior to CIBC, Jessie’s experience at Hatch and Golder Associates involved mining and mineral processing projects around the world, the development of mining technology R&D projects, the on-site scheduling of a greenfield underground mine development, and the engineering of paste backfill plants.

Jessie is a Professional Engineer with an Engineering degree from Queen’s University, and a Schulich MBA graduate.
