CIM Calgary Branch, in collaboration with CIM MES, is pleased to present:

Bruce Peachey

President & CEO, New Paradigm Engineering Ltd.

who will deliver a presentation on:

Utilizing Legacy Underground Mines for Geothermal Energy

Legacy coal and hard rock mines represent an opportunity for the local municipalities which grew up around them to utilize the existing but mainly abandoned mine infrastructure for various purposes related to energy, waste and water management. These uses may generate significant energy cost savings that will make the municipality more attractive to new businesses and to maintain services for their remaining populations.

Often the mines are ignored, seen as a threat or an on-going environmental burden, however, there are a number of opportunities which may result in old mines, providing value for future generations who can utilize those assets and generate benefits for the community. Some of the potential uses are: 1) ground geothermal heat pump energy sources and thermal energy storage; 2) in-situ bioreactors for waste biomass or coal to produce biogas, bioliquids or biosolids for energy or agricultural needs; 3) compressed gas energy storage; 4) repositories for long term storage of waste materials.

This presentation will discuss the potential for geothermal energy from coal mines in Alberta and how that production could be further enhanced through integrating other energy processes with legacy mines.

Biography:

Mr. Peachey graduated with a BSc in Chemical Engineering (’76) from the University of Saskatchewan. He has over 40 years experience in the upstream energy industry, mainly on projects related to energy efficiency, water conservation and sustainable recovery of hydrocarbons.

After graduation, Bruce spent 16 years with Imperial Oil/Esso Resources, with 12 of those years working on Imperial’s Cold Lake and mineable oil sands projects, and the rest in conventional upstream oil and gas facilities, including both management and senior technical specialist roles. In 1991, he left Imperial and formed New Paradigm Engineering to “engineer new paradigms” or new ways of looking at chronic sustainability problems in the oil, gas and energy industries related to oil recovery, water management, methane vent reduction, energy efficiency and long-term R&D needs studies. New Paradigm has recently formed a new division called Nexov Canada to employ some of the many new petroleum engineering graduates currently looking for work. He was a founding member of the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) in 1996, and is a sessional lecturer at the University of Alberta, instructing 4th year Petroleum and Chemical Engineering students.
