Why Projects Fail: Capital Project Lessons Learned and Nickel Project Case Study
Abstract: Large mining, energy, heavy industrial, and infrastructure projects are particularly vulnerable to cost overruns and schedule delays. “Failure” may not necessarily result in a total loss, but rather a level of significant underperformance that reduces stakeholder returns. In our experience, most risks can be managed—or even avoided—by owners and lenders when: 1) comprehensive, independent due diligence is conducted by the right expertise(s) before funding and 2) Independent monitoring or periodic review is carried out during project execution by the right expertise(s). This presentation will highlight common root causes of project underperformance and share lessons learned from a recent mining project in Brazil that ended in liquidation and near-total loss for senior lenders.
