Upstream Oil & Gas Financial Modeling

OVERVIEW

This course focuses on the skills required to design and create a dynamic financial model of an oil and gas exploration and production company. The model starts from a known production schedule (for example, one provided by an engineering team) and covers model design, logic, construction, financial concepts, and accounting treatment. Participants will build an integrated 3-statement financial model. Various intermediate Excel tools along with helpful keyboard shortcuts will also be covered throughout the course.

 

TOPICS INCLUDE

Design and structure a financial model:

  • Design a clear and logical financial model
  • Discuss the need for a model to serve as a marketing tool
  • Create clearly defined inputs and assumptions sections

Build scenarios and financial forecasts:

  • Use switches to create effective scenarios and value drivers
  • Forecast and build up a company’s revenues and expenses
  • Construct all necessary schedules, including:
    • Commodities pricing fundamentals (includes regional differentials)
    • Hedging & derivatives impact on cash flow (time permitting)
    • Production profile and scenarios
    • Overview of depreciation/depletion expense
    • Overview of oil & gas specific tax considerations
    • Effective schedule to forecast the company’s working capital

Incorporate the capital structure:

  • Properly incorporate senior term debt with an amortizing repayment schedule
  • Create a robust bank operating line (or revolving credit facility)
  • Design and incorporate a cash sweep for a company’s bank operating line
  • Balance the company’s balance sheet
  • Calculate key operating and credit statistics

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course focuses on the skills required to design and create a dynamic financial model of an oil and gas exploration and production company. The model includes producing oil and gas reserves and development drilling to increase production. The course material includes model design, logic, construction, financial concepts, and accounting treatment. Various intermediate Excel tools along with helpful keyboard shortcuts will also be covered throughout the course.

INSTRUCTOR’s BIO

Jamie Wilkie is based in Alberta, Canada and helps drive specialized product commercialization & development (including oil & gas, financial communications & other industry-specific applications), in addition to being a Western Canada-based instructor. Jamie spent approximately 12 years in investment banking with firms including Merrill Lynch, TD, UBS & Wells Fargo with a specialized focus on Energy & Infrastructure M&A, debt & equity transactions. In addition, he has consulted with publicly traded & private equity-backed energy companies in the areas of financial communications, financial modelling & analysis.

 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Financial professionals with exposure to this industry, such as Bankers Research Analysts, Advisors, Asset Managers, Internal Corporate Finance Professionals, etc. In short: anyone who recognizes that fossil fuels will not be replaced anytime soon.

Prerequisites: Participants will be sent a link in advance of the course and must use their computer to participate. Microsoft Excel is required for this course. Participants should have a working knowledge of Excel and Upstream Oil & Gas projects. A laptop with any version of Excel is required for this course.

 

LOCATION

This course is being offered online. Note that there will be a 15-minute break in the morning and afternoon and a lunch break from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET.
